Light curtains use a lineal array of red lights with a matching array of sensors to detect the light beams.

If the light beam is broken, this is detected the electronics of the system and the hazardous machinery is switched off. In the laboratory automation workcells, this is primarily the robot. Any other equipment can be wired into the safety circuit to ensure total shut down and total safety.

The system chosen for the automate.it SAFEcel L system has the additional advantage of total coverage down to 5mm from the bench.

Mirrors are used to reflect the beam around 2, 3 or 4 sides of the workcell.
