GranuMet Detect instrument

Real Time Alert of Impending Process Problems GranuMet Detect™ is a non-invasive window into your process. It responds in real time and will alert you of impending process problems. This technology will substantially reduce the risk of process upset and improve processing efficiency.

Many processes generate acoustic emission activity. Acoustic emission signals are high frequency sound emitted by physical and chemical processes. Even in the noisiest of industrial environments, processes can be monitored using high frequency contact sensors, which are immune to extraneous noise.

features

In contrast to other non-invasive techniques such as nucleonics, acoustic emission responds to dynamic events making it suitable for process control.

It is very sensitive allowing many apparently silent processes to be monitored effectively. High temperature intrinsically safe sensors (Tamb = 190º C) are NOW available. Contact Ron Belchamber for details.

applications
  • Entrainment of liquid in gas streams (reactor outlets, distillation columns etc.)
  • Cyclone efficiency
  • Particulates in gas streams
  • Cavitation in pumps and valves (development, alarms and control)
  • Slug flow in pipelines (measurement of slug size and velocity)

system outline
  • Intrinsically safe acoustic emission sensors, preamplifiers and cables
  • GranuMet XP acoustic emission system, signal conditioning unit (including IS barriers) with 4-20 mA outputs or other connection to DCS
  • GranuMet modeling and statistical process control software

system features & benefits

features benefits
Provides real time process information Can be integrated into closed control loop
Non-invasive application Containment does not need be breached - low cost installation, ensured sterility
High Sensitivity Can detect very low levels of particulates
Up to 16 acoustic emission monitoring channels Provides a very affordable price per channel
Intrinsically safe equipment (EEx ia IIC T4) Safe installation in hazardous areas, does not need purged or explosion proof enclosures

advantages over alternative technology

Application Acoustic Emission Monitoring Alternative Technology
Detection of entrained particles Very sensitive, non-invasive Difficult to monitor by other methods
Multiphase flow in pipelines (e.g.oil/gas) Very sensitive, intrinsically safe (can be used to determine length and velocity of slugs) Gamma ray - hazardous source, expensive, non-intrinsically safe
Detection of particles or droplets in recycles, cyclone exhausts etc. Very sensitive Difficult to monitor by other methods
Cavitation in pumps and valves Detects the onset of cavitation, insensitive to background noise or vibrations Accelerometers can only detect severe cavitation
Batch sequence verification Many sequences in batch process operation produce characteristic AE activity Multiple monitoring methods may have to be used
